Package Dissection: “소면”

I had a packet of dry noodles, ‘소면’ by 신선미 brand and decided to ‘study’ what was written on it haha. I suppose you could say ‘dissect’ instead of ‘study’ ㅠㅠ. ‘소면’ and is similar to vermicelli and can be also called plain or fine noodles. There were some cooking instructions on the back of the packet, and it didn’t just have instructions in English but in Korean to! So that was pretty handy. Usually, most packaging I get just provides English instructions.

I was surprised at how long it took to look up each word and try to understand it more. Maybe I’m just really slow or something, but it took quite a while and my Word document ended up being quite long hehe! I didn’t end up finding the meaning for each word but I got most (I think!) Or at least an idea of most words.

I’m sure there are quite a few mistakes or errors with this, if you end up noticing anything wrong feel free to point it out. I would appreciate it very much! Or if you know the meanings of the words I wasn’t sure of that would be awesome too! Oh and if you just want to read some of the words I looked up in the dictionaries just scroll all the way down to the bottom. I just copied and pasted everything that I looked up.

This was fun but it just took me a long time haha. This post looks like a strain to the eyes, I should probably add some pictures or something colorful to it…._.

THE COOKING DIRECTIONS:

STEP 1:

 큰 냄비에 2/4 GAL 정도의 물을 끓인 후, 소금 2~3티스푼과 함께 적당량의 국수를 넣습니다.
Translation on the packet: Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add noodle according to the portion you wish to serve. Add 2/3 teaspoon of salt.

큰= Large/Big
냄비= Pot/Saucepan
2/4 GAL = 2/4 of a Gallon
정도 = Degree (Bring 2 quarts of water to a certain extent? Bring to quarts of water to a certain degree?)
물 = Water
끓/끓 = To boil
후 = Once (I think this is something like a transition word like: then, next, after, furthermore, after that – do this etc. Conjunction – that’s it! It’s a conjunction. A word that connects a sentence, making it flow more.)
소금 = salt
티스푼 = Teaspoon
과 = and
함께 = together, simultaneously,
-과 함께= with
적당 = suitableness
적당량 = suitable, moderate,
적당하다 = To be at a suitable amount (fit, suitable, adequate, proper, right, reasonable)
국수 = Noodles
넣 = Insert, place, put in, pour in
넣다 = to place, to insert, to pour, to put in

We have: large, pot, 2/4 gallon, degree, water, boil, then, salt, teaspoon, and, together, with, suitable amount, noodles (again) and place.

‘큰 냄비에 2/4 GAL 정도의 물을 끓인 후’ –> ‘Large pot 2/4 GAL certain degree of water to a boil.’ I guess it could also be directly translated as, “2/4 gallons of water to a large pot and boil. Then,/Bring (No word for bring though) 2/4 gallons of water to a large pot and boil. Then,” “2/4 gallons of water(을) in(에) a large pot to an amount and(의) boil. Then, (후)”
Note: I don’t know what the “인” part of “끓인” is though!
Edit: “끓인” instead of just “boil” I think, this means, “boiled” + the ‘-ed’

“소금 2~3티스푼과 함께 적당량의 국수를 넣습니다.”
We have: Salt, 2-3 teaspoons, and, together, to a suitable amount, noodles, place in.

“Place in a suitable amount of noodles together with 2-3 teaspoons of salt.

“큰 냄비에 2/4 GAL 정도의 물을 끓인 후, 소금 2~3티스푼과 함께 적당량의 국수를 넣습니다.”

“Bring 2/4 gallons of water in a large pot to a certain amount and boil. Then place in a suitable amount of noodles together with 2-3 teaspoons of salt.” 

“Pour 2/4 gallons of water to a certain amount in a large pot and then boil. After, place in a suitable amount of noodles, together with 2-3 teaspoons of salt.”

“Boil 2/4 gallons of water to a certain amount in a large part. After, place in a suitable amount of noodles, together with 2-3 teaspoons of salt.”

STEP 2:

국수를 정확히 3분만끓입니다.
Translation on the packet: Cook for 3 minutes, do not overcook.

국수 = Noodles
끓다= To boil
분 = Minutes/Time (?) Ex. 삼분 = Three minutes
만= Only
정확히 = Accurately/Precisely

We have: noodles (국수), accurately(정확히), three minutes (3분), only (만) and boil (끓). I’m guessing this could be translated directly as “Boil the noodles for only 3 minutes, accurately.” Accurately…suggesting that you shouldn’t over cook the noodles. Boil could be also worded as cook as well. “Boil the noodles for 3 minutes, do not boil too much.” Do not boil too much = Do not overcook. “Cook the noodles for 3 minutes, do not overcook.”
And so we have the translation, “Cook for 3 minutes, do not overcook.”
I see. I see.

STEP 3:

채에 국수를 건져낸 나음 흐르는 물에 헹궈 냅니다.
Translation on the packet: Drain noodles in a strainer and rinse with cold water.

채 = (잘 모르겠어요 Not sure) After searching through a few dictionaries, I can’t really find a meaning that would suit this sentence or topic. I googled image, “채에” and found pictures of strainers and sifting. I do think “채” means something to do with a strainer. I also ended up finding that the word, “체” has a meaning of ‘sieve’, ‘sifter’, ‘strainer’ So I’m not sure if this was a typo mistake or not but both seem to have meanings of something to do with strainers!
국수 = Noodles
건지다 = To take (bring) out of water, to pull up or draw up, to remove, to fish out, to scoop.
건져낸 = (잘 모르겠어요 Not sure) Looks like “건지다” in another form…”건지어 = 건져”?
흐르 = flow
흐르다 = to flow
흐르는 물 = flowing water, running water
물에 = in water
헹궈 = rinse, wash
헹구다 = to rinse, to wash
냅 = (잘 모르겠어요Not sure) Closest thing I found that could be it would be, “내배다” meaning to soak through, saturate.

This one was very difficult! It looks like a lot of words have been joined and changed ㅠㅠ So it looks like we have the words: strainer, noodles, remove, running, rinse and soak.
Translation on packet: Drain noodles in a strainer and rinse with cold water.”
“Drain noodles in a strainer and rinse with running water.”

STEP 4:

국수를 준비한 그릇에 넣은 후 유수를 붓고 계란, 오이를 곁들여 드시면 맛이 더욱 좋슴니다.
Translation on the packet: Place noodles into a bowl and add prepared soup, garnish with hard-boiled egg and shredded cucumber to augment flavour.

국수= Noodles
준비 = preparation
준비다 = to prepare
준비한 = prepared
그릇 = bowl, container, basin, dish, plate
넣 = insert, place, put in
넣다 = to insert, to put, to place, to put in
후 = then, conjunction
유수 = (잘 모르겠어요 Not sure)
붓고 = to pour
계란 = egg
오이 = cucumber
곁들여 = garnish
곁들이다 = to add to, to garnish
드시면 = (잘 모르겠어요 Not sure)
맛 = taste, flavour
더욱 = more, further, increasingly
좋다 = good, fine, nice

I can’t find out what “유수” means. …Where is the word for ‘soup’? Is “유수” a word for soup?
“Place noodles into a bowl, and pour prepared soup. Then, garnish with egg and cucumber to increase flavour.”

Other things written on the packaging:

신선미 = Shin Sun Mi brand
고객 = customer
건강 = health, sound, well
건강하다 = to be in good health, to be fit, to be well
먼저 = first, ahead, before
생각 = thought, thinking, idea, think consider

Above this text it says, “Well-being food” So I was assuming this sentence was something similar to that, and it looks like it is!
Google translator gave me: “Freshness to the customer’s health first thought”

We have: Shin Sun Mi (brand), customer, health, first and thought.
If I tried translating this I’d translate it as, “Shin Sun Mi thinks first of the customers health.” “Shin Sun Mi thinks about our customers’ health.” Maybe something like that, I think? Or maybe not…haha. But it does sound like something that would be on a packet of noodles that are healthy!

There was also, “한국 산” and above this it said, “Product of Korea”
So if you write something like, “미국 산” this would mean, “Product of America” or “호주 산” meaning, “Product of Australia”
Google translated, ““호주 산” with, “Australian” too, so I suppose the above could also be translated as “Korean, Korean Product, American, American Product, Australian.”
